After taking a strong lead over Dodge City on Sunday, the Twins find themselves ready and willing to move on to the NBC World series.
The team finished their season on a relatively strong note with a successful series against Liberal followed by winning two of three games against Dodge City.
On Friday the Twins began their series against Dodge. They held a six-point lead, ending the game with a score of 7-1. Saturday’s game was suspended after six complete innings of a scoreless game. When resumed in the seventh inning on Sunday, the Twins came out strong, scoring an immediate run. They gave up a few runs at the top of the eighth and just could not pull themselves up. They were beat 2-1.
Sunday’s game was one with a much different outcome. Derby ended on top with a score of 12-8, ending the series with the majority of the wins.
“I knew going into it that the Dodge City series would be a tough series,” coach Bill Shaw said. “We were playing a team that had everything to gain and no thing to lose, and we were kind of the opposite.”
The series concluded league play for the Twins, who ended up at second place in the Jayhawk League below Hays.
On Tuesday, August. 5, the Twins will play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, in Wichita, as a competitor in the NBC World Series.
Their placement in the series was determined by the outcome of their last game compared to the outcome of Nevada’s series against Hays, the top team in the league.
The Twins ended the season above Nevada.
“We knew we would be in the NBC World Series, it just determined our placement,” Shaw said.
This season the Derby Twins baseball team was comprised of so many strengths that, according to Shaw, no particular person or part of the team can be pin-pointed as the cause of success.
“We talk strongly about team effort,” Shaw said.
That is definitely an idea that his team grasped strongly.
“We saw our pitching staff become pretty dominate,” Coach said.
There were strong pitchers starting every game but they alone did not carry the team.
“Defense has always been strong, all season,” Shaw said.
Although the hitting comes and goes the team has their strengths in this area as well.
Overall the team has grown into a strong group that work as a single unit as opposed to several individual groups.
Their strengths can be seen at the NBC World Series where they are expected to play up to their full potential for fans.
The fans have been an important part of the Twins team, showing their support all season in many unique ways.
“After our last game we tipped our hats to the Derby fans to show our appreciation,” Shaw said.
Both the players and coaches will appreciate the continuing support of the fans during the World Series.
