Knowing that a loss would mean that the team was home-bound, the Derby Twins entered their second game of the NBCâWorlds Series on Thursday ready to win. The attitudes of the players and coaching staff reflected their willingness to do whatever it would take to win this game. The games of the day were running late and even though it had been nearly two hours after the Twins were scheduled to play coach Bill Shaw could still be found sitting on the edge of his chair, ready to be in the game.
The game began Thursday afternoon in a manner that was much different than the Twins’ first game in the Series. Only two innings in the Twins scored their first run of the game leaving the San Diego Stars one run behind.
In the bottom of the fourth the Stars made one run to even out the score at 1-1.
Derby came back to bat at the top of the fifth, coming close to locking in their win.
With William Uechi in scoring position Brett Douglas hits his way to first, bringing Uechi to the home plate. Uechi steals second and Jeff Taliaferro bats his way to first base.
Jordan Cruz takes the plate. He bats his way to third while Douglas and Taliaferro score the third and fourth runs for the Derby Twins.
At the end of the sixth there are no more runs and the score remains 4-1, with the Twins leading. Taliaferro makes the final run in the top of the seventh and set the score of 5-1 which would remain for the rest of the game.
