The Derby Twins kicked off their first game of the NBC World Series Tuesday night at around 10 p.m. Going up against the Conejo Oaks from California was a struggle from the beginning for the Twins who began at bat.
Louis Templeton bats first striking out. He is followed by Brett Douglas who bats his way to second base after only one strike. "
“We had a threat in the first inning,” coach Bill Shaw said. “It came with no runs though.”
During the first two innings the Twins had no trouble hitting the ball, it was where the ball went that was working against them.
After numerous ground balls and straight shots that were easily caught the hitting almost diminished.
“In the second until almost the sixth inning we had very few hits,” Shaw said.
While playing in the field it seemed as though the Twins got off to a nervous start with modest pitching by Ben Graham. According to Shaw a good number of the boys playing for the Twins had never had the experience of playing at the Series before.
“I thought our guys played a little nervous,” Shaw said.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Oaks scored three runs. They got another in the bottom of the seventh.
The Twins retaliated with three runs in the top of the eighth but could not manage to get any more.
“During the ninth inning we had runners on first and second base with no outs and just couldn’t get them into scoring position,” Shaw said.
Derby lost the game with a final score of 4-3.
“We jumped quickly into the losers bracket and now we just have to fight hard,” Shaw said.
The Twins will be back at Lawrence-Dumont today to play their game in the losers bracket to determine if their World Series play will continue or if the boys will go home.
They will be playing in game No. 36 of the losers bracket against another California team, the San Diego Stars. The Stars lost in the game after the Twins to the Crestwood Panthers from Illinois.
