Derby, Kan. -

At their Nov. 24 meeting, the USD 260 Board of Education (BOE) presented two “I Make a Difference” awards – one to Pleasantview Elementary teacher David Colvin, and the other to Derby School District volunteers Lisa Walker and Danny WImberly.

Teacher uses fairy tale to promote reading

USD 260 teacher Colvin works in Inclusion at Pleasantview.

When the students at Pleasantview decided that they wanted to put on their third play for literacy night, Colvin took it upon himself to spend many hours brainstorming, and then writing their fractured fairy tale.

He used his talent, along with the help of his mother and children to personalize the fairy tale, including many items familiar to Pleasantview children – all while promoting reading.

Lowes employees create field trip for Kindergarten students

USD 260 volunteers Lisa Walker and Danny Wimberly, from the DerbyLowes store, worked with Jeff Smith, the district’s instructional coordinator for science, to develop a field trip for Kindergarten students.

The field trip is built around state science outcomes and matches the science curriculum.

Students were able to tour Lowes and see and touch the materials they had been studying and creating in their wood and paper unit, all with an emphasis on safety.

Smith accepted on Walker and Wimberly’s behalf.
