Derby, Kan. -

No golden ticket is necessary to enjoy a children’s musical version of the classic tale of Willy Wonka and his magical chocolate factory.

The Derby Recreation Commission’s (DRC) Camp Center Stage will perform Willy Wonka Jr. at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 and a 6 p.m. this Friday and Saturday night at the Derby High School Blackbox Theatre.

Admission is $2 per person for ages 12 and older and $1 for children ages 2-11. Refreshments will be served.

“The 24 member cast consists of actors ages 7-14 who have been faithfully rehearsing four days a week for 8-weeks,” DRC Marketing Director Lisa Spillman said. “The actors have memorized lines, songs and dance steps in preparation for their culmination project, the final performances for the community.”

This adapted version of Roald Dahl’s family film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” includes musical numbers “Pure Imagination”, “I Want It Now” and four ever-popular Oompa Loompa songs.

According to Spillman, student director Ashley Beck and stage manager Ian Rethmeier have worked diligently to ensure that the Camp Center Stage students learned the fine points of theater performance including projection, articulation and expressive movements.

“It is amazing the progress that these students have made in such a short period of time,” DRC Art Director Marc Durfee said. “The audience is in for a treat as they watch the world of Wonka come to life thanks to the hard work of these great young actors.”
