Derby, Kan. -

Last week the Senate passed the bill that will rename a post office in Derby to the "Jamie O. Maugans Post Office Building".

U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) introduced this bill (H.R. 5135) in January, and Senator Sam  Brownback helped usher the bill through the Senate.

The President is expected to sign the bill any day.

Sergeant Jamie O’Dell Maugans was the first casualty of the Global War on Terror from the 4th Congressional District of Kansas.

He was deployed to Afghanistan in connection with Operation Enduring Freedom.

On April 15, 2002, while disposing of ordnances near Kandahar, Maugans was killed along with three others, including fellow Kansan Staff Sergeant Justin Galewski, from Olathe.

He was 27 years old.

“Although H.R. 5135 names the Derby post office after Maugans, this endeavor is not only a way to honor Jamie but also a way to honor all those from Kansas who have died in defense of our nation,” Tiahrt said. “As the first casualty from my District, Jamie’s life and memory are representational of all those who have lost their lives in the Global War on Terror.

“I hope this effort will be a reminder to everyone in South-central Kansas of the sacrifice that so many veterans have made for our country and our freedoms.”
