At the Field Kindley Memorial High School debate tournament in Coffeyville, the Derby High School (DHS) debate squad took three first places in the tournament that was held Oct. 10 and 11.
The DHS squad won the first place sweepstakes award given to the school with the best four team combined record with a 16 win, four loss record.
There were 16 schools competing at the tournament.
Individually, the team of David Rose and Steven Schaaf won first place in open division.
David and Steven were undefeated in preliminary competition with a 5-0 record.
They defeated a team from Caney Valley in quarterfinals, a team from Fort Scott in semifinals, and a team from Buhler in finals to claim first place and an undefeated record.
In novice division, the team of Alexa Jacobs and Jacob Tims were undefeated with a 5-0 record and claimed the first place trophy.
The DHS squad also had a team place third.
Anthony McIntosh and Vyonis Schnell had a three win, two loss record in prelims.
They advanced to quarterfinals where they beat a team from Ft. Scott, but they lost to a Buhler team in semifinals.
Other team records that contributed to the sweepstakes win were the team of Anthony Caldera and Aurora Yager who had a 3-2 record in open division.
In novice divsion, Tayler Bush and Colby Price had a 3-2 record.
At the Wichita East debate tournament on Oct. 10 and 11, the DHS debate squad had a novice team take fifth place.
The team of Elias Jordan and Chelsea Dix had a four win, one loss record.
Other records from the Wichita East tournament are as follows:
In open division, both DHS teams had a record of three wins and two losses.
These teams were JW Waldschmidt and Aaron Mikolajcik and Chris Kellenbarger and James Macionski.
In novice division, the other two teams from DHS had 2-3 records. These teams were Ben Laurhammer and Josh Mascharka and Kadrae Smith and Emily Smith.
Next action for the DHS squad is this Saturday at Wichita Collegiate.
