The Derby Marketplace is filling up quickly.
Since opening in October, businesses of all sizes have been settling in, putting up their signs and preparing for business.
Sport Clips is no exception.
According to owner Monique Haynes-Robertson, the sports-themed hair styling salon for men and boys, which opened in November, has enjoyed a healthy flow of customers since.
At the Derby Sport Clips, stylists offer professional hair cuts to men and boys in a fun, sports-themed environment.
“We offer an upscale MPV service, which includes a precision haircut followed by an invigorating scalp massage with Tea Tree Shampoo while the client reclines in a massage chair, a classic steamed towel treatment, and finally a relaxing upper neck and shoulder massage,” Haynes-Robertson said. “The client also will enjoy watching his favorite game while he’s at Sport Clips, since we have TVs playing sports at all of the hair cutting stations.”
Product lines the shop carries include Paul Mitchell, America Crew and Nioxin.
They also stock sports memorabilia and other sports items.
Sport Clips is not like a usual salon or barber shop.
“The upbeat, sports-themed shops and our signature MPV service makes us unique,” Haynes-Robertson said. “We also offer complimentary neck trims in between hair cuts.”
The Derby location is open seven days a week and takes walk-in clients and stylist request.
Every child 10 and under receives a “Sports Pack” when they come in for the first time that includes a sports pennant, pencil, comb and lollipop.
“We have been very busy since we opened last month and we expect to see even more growth after Dillons Marketplace opens early next year,” Haynes-Robertson said. “We have seen increased client count every week and lots of positive feedback from Derby residents.”
Haynes-Robertson and the team at Sport Clips are big supporters of the Derby Panthers, also.
“Our stylists support the school by wearing Panther T-shirts every Friday and we help sponsor the sports team’s banquets by providing $21 gift cards to every student athlete,” Haynes-Robertson said.
In addition to the Derby store, Haynes-Robertson owns the entire Wichita area market for the franchise, including a store at New Market Square in Northwest Wichita, which opened three years ago and was recently named one of the top performing Sport Clips in the United States and was number one in sales in November out of the franchise’s 610 locations across the country.
Haynes-Robertson plans to open two more locations in the next two to three years.
“It’s such a fun company to be a part of,” she said. “Our clients and team members love working for Sport Clips. Our motto is to give every client a ‘Championship Haircut Experience,’ so we, as employees, have a fun time at work and the clients leave satisfied as well.”
Haynes-Robertson got into the business four years ago.
“I came across a franchise in Oklahoma City and knew it would be a huge hit in this area,” she said. “We are priced very reasonably, with the MVP service costing only $21. Men love having a place where they feel comfortable getting their hair cut and we provide that, along with top-of-the-line customer service.”
The Derby Sport Clips employees eight stylists, including seven cosmetologists and one licensed barber, as well as three client coordinators/receptionists.
“All employees complete a professional training program with the company,” Haynes-Robertson said. “We specialize in all types of haircuts, including the latest trends and also military haircuts and ethnic hair.”
Manager Amanda Gile has worked for Sport Clips for three years and was in management at Haynes-Robertson’s Wichita location before transferring to Derby.
Other team members include assistant managers Jessica Morgan, Whitney Good, and Ashley Morse, stylists Erika Breault, Shilesha Dunn and Jennifer Weber, barber Tira Hubbard, and client coordinators Sareena Mansoor, Pamela Todd and Lorraina Graybill.
Choosing Derby for her store was easy, Haynes-Robertson said.
“Derby Marketplace will be a phenomenal retail shopping center for Derby residents once it’s fully completed, and we wanted to be a part of the exciting opportunity,” she said. “The residents of Derby are huge sports enthusiasts, as well, so that fits perfectly with Sport Clips. We also like to get very involved with the community that we are a part of, supporting the local sports teams, schools and community organizations.
“Derby is a great community to be affiliated with, and we are thrilled to be here.”
