The Derby Public Library has recently increased its subscriptions to online databases providing a wide range of information available to library patrons 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The library has expanded America’s Newspapers from 661 titles to 1164 titles including popular papers such as USA Today, Wall Street Journal, The Oklahoman, The Kansas City Star, and St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Full text articles are available from newspapers across the 50 states and from many of the news magazines including Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, Sports Illustrated, and Sports Illustrated for Kids.
“This has increased accessibility to a wide range of newspapers for our patrons” User Support Services Coordinator Debbie Thomas said.“There is no way we could afford to have individual subscriptions to each of these newspapers.”
The library has expanded the EBSCO database subscription to include: Auto Repair Reference Center, Home Improvement Reference Center, Small Engine Repair, NoveList K-8 Plus (non fiction), NoveList Plus (nonfiction) and Career Library. The library had earlier subscribed to EBSCO Host which included Literary Reference Center; GreenFile which offers information covering the human impact on the environment; Middle Search Plus with full text for more than 140 popular middle school magazines; Newspaper Source; Professional Development Collection that contains 520 high quality education journals; ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center; EBSCO Animals with a variety of topics relating to animals; Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia; Health Source – Consumer Edition; NoveList and NoveList K-8.
Some of the library’s databases require a current Derby Library card in good standing to access the information.
To apply for a library card, visit the Derby Library located at 611 N. Mulberry, Suite 200. Some form of identification including current address is required at the time of application.

Over 2,500 occupations and post-secondary careers are featured. Assessment testing is available to help in finding the right career choice.
The database contains complete profiles on 4,000 colleges and universities.
A resume builder is included and practice quizzes for the GED, ACT and SAT tests are available.
“The databases provided on our website make a branch library available to our patrons from the convenience of their personal home computer,” Thomas said. “Purchasing books to include all the topics covered by these online tools would be extremely costly, require large spaces to keep them, and would continually need updating.
“I would encourage everyone to get online and start exploring all that is now available from the Derby Library website.”
