Derby, Kan. -

At 11:42 a.m. on Thursday, Sept.11, the Derby Police Department received a call from Derby High School with the report of a bomb threat. The threat was in written form and was reported to school administration by a student.

Derby Police officers responded to the school and learned that the threat indicated an incident was to occur at a later date. The Derby Police Department and USD 260 officials conducted an
investigation into the incident. Officials interviewed witnesses and identified a suspect. Findings
showed that the threat was a hoax.

A 14 year-old student was arrested for criminal threats. The suspect was removed from school by
Derby Police and taken to the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center. The case will be referred to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office for prosecution. Derby Police and USD 260 officials
are confident that this threat has been resolved, and there will be no change in the school schedule.

Kansas law states that “a criminal threat is any threat to commit violence communicated with intent to terrorize another, or to cause the evacuation of any building, place of assembly or facility of transportation, or in reckless disregard of the risk of causing such terror or evacuation.”
